Barry Road, East Dulwich SE22
Ground floor extension in a leafy part of East Dulwich
This single-storey extension on a leafy road in East Dulwich creates additional living space for a ground floor Victorian flat. Having lived in New York for a period of time, the clients were keen to bring a Manhattan style to the interior. Planning restraints dictated that the adjoining wall with one of the neighbours could not be higher than 2.4m. This restriction opened up new opportunities. The new sloping roof allowed for a large, glazed skylight to bring valuable daylight into the rear of the space.
Supporting the sloping roof is an exposed, yellow, London stock brick wall, which echoes the exposed brick work popular in many New York loft designs. Rather than covering up the new steel structure, all members have been finished in matte black to express them as an integral part of the interior scheme. The oak floor unites the palette of materials and opens up the space onto the garden.
