Grade II listed 19th-century Victorian building restoration of Quaker Meeting House in Richmond, London to modernise and improve accessibility.

It is with great pride of our involvement in the restoration of several Quaker Meeting Houses. This project focused on the Grade II listed Quaker Meeting House, set within a conservation area, in Richmond, South-West London. Despite the seemingly modest scale of the project, it presented a considerable challenge due to the inherent complexities of the existing 19th-century building, characterised by split levels.

Recognising the importance of inclusivity, particularly for individuals with mobility concerns, our primary objective was to prioritise accessibility in our design decisions. The existing layout posed significant challenges to worship and general use, prompting a meticulous approach to overcome these obstacles. In adherence to our commitment to accessibility, materials were selected with a deliberate emphasis on inclusive properties. To address the vertical circulation challenges posed by the split levels, a small platform lift was strategically incorporated into our design. This addition ensured that the restored building not only complied with modern accessibility standards but also embraced the historical significance of the Grade II listed structure.

Our proposed outcome is a Quaker Meeting House that stands as a testament to the harmonious coexistence of heritage conservation and contemporary accessibility. The design decisions made in the Richmond Meeting House exemplify our dedication to creating spaces that cater to the diverse needs of users, reaffirming the ethos of inclusivity within the realm of religious and historical architecture in South-West London.
